SOUTH DAKOTA LAWN MOWER RACING ASSOCIATION
BECOMES USLMRA LOCAL CHAPTER
Glenview, IL (December 6, 2007) - When you think of South Dakota, you think
of Mt. Rushmore, the Black Hills, Great Plains and now the South Dakota Lawn
Mower Racing Association (SDLMRA). The SDLMRA has joined the U.S. Lawn Mower
Racing Association (USLMRA) as a Local Chapter and will begin racing across
"The Land of Great Faces and Great Places" in 2008.
The SDLMRA is under the direction of Brian and Mark Gustad along with veteran
North Dakota Lawn Mower Racing Association (NDLMRA) Board Member and racer
Brent Purdy. Brian Gustad burst onto the USLMRA racing scene in 2007 and
finished 11th in US Points in the CP Class.
"We are thrilled with this opportunity to bring USLMRA lawn mower racing to
South Dakota," said Brian Gustad from his home in Beresford, SD. "My cousin
Mark and I started racing back in high school with friends and always dreamed of
getting to race at the national level. We took the jump and decided to build
some pretty fast racing machines and I think we bring some pretty tough
competition to the table. We are just scratching the surface when it comes to
builders and drivers in South Dakota. What started as Mark and me building a track
to race on in an abandoned hog yard turned into something that will benefit
fairs and events around South Dakota. We really want to stress how gracious we
are about how much support we have received from the members of the USLMRA,
this has really been a great learning experience thanks to that."
The first official SDLMRA event will be a Build Clinic and Meet and Greet,
February 9 in Yankton, SD. SDLMRA and NDLMRA racers and officials will be on
hand to share ideas, swap parts, provide advice and talk lawn mower racing.
The U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association is the nation's oldest and largest
national lawn mower racing sanctioning body, pioneering American lawn mower
racing in 1992. The USLMRA hosts the STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series that
crowns national champions in six classes and sanctions a network of 20 Local
Chapters that host more than 100 races each year. Racers compete on riding
lawn mowers with all cutting blades removed at speeds up to 60 mph. Racers
compete for points, trophies and bragging rights. There are no cash prizes in
USLMRA lawn mower racing, which keeps the sport inexpensive and fun.
The USLMRA is televised on the Outdoor Channel and Speed Channel and has been
featured on ESPN2, the Discovery Channel and the TV sitcom, "Home
Improvement," as well as in the New York Times, USA Today, Sports Illustrated, the Wall
Street Journal and The Paul Harvey Radio Network.
